What type of paddleboards do you rent?
SUP Asheville uses high quality NRS brand inflatable paddleboards.
NRS is widely recognized as an industry leader in paddling gear manufacturing. Their company is 100% employee owned and they hand shape all of their paddleboards right here in the United States at their Idaho facility.
Our SUP fleet specifically features the NRS X-Lite inflatable paddleboards, which are designed to be exceptionally lightweight without sacrificing durability. NRS’s innovative Z/Blend Core™ construction makes X-Lite boards 20% stiffer AND 15% lighter than previous models. X-Lite boards are easy to carry, quick to inflate, and offer outstanding rigidity and strength on the water—making them perfect for paddlers of all experience levels.
Why do you use inflatable boards? Should I be worried that they might pop?
We use inflatable boards because they’re incredibly durable and practical—often even more so than traditional hard boards. Our inflatable paddleboards are made from tough, military-grade materials designed to withstand bumps, scrapes, and impacts that would easily damage a traditional hard board. This makes them ideal for river trips, where rocks and uneven shorelines are common.
You don’t need to worry about them popping—these boards are built to handle rough conditions and are extremely resistant to punctures. In fact, they’re much less likely to crack or break compared to hard boards. Plus, they’re easy to transport: when deflated, they can be stored in a compact carry backpack that can fit in any vehicle, so there’s no need for roof racks or complicated tie-downs. Our X-Lite SUP’s are even small & lightweight enough to hike into remote locations with!
When fully inflated, our NRS boards are just as stable and rigid as hard boards, so you get all the performance with added durability and convenience.
Can I rent my board pre-inflated?
Absolutely! If you’re able to adequately transport a fully inflated SUP we’re happy to make your life a little bit easier. We include electric pumps with our rentals so you can travel with your SUP’s conveniently and save all your energy for your paddle trip. Our electric pumps can fully inflate your board within 10 minutes and have enough battery to inflate 4+ SUP’s per charge. They can also be plugged into your cars 12V socket if you run out of battery.
What PSI should I inflate my board to?
If you’re inflating your board yourself, we recommend inflating to around 15 PSI. After 15 PSI the stiffness of the board only increases marginally.
All our boards have a 20 PSI maximum but you should never fully inflate them. When left in the sun the air inside the boards may expand and overinflation can lead to a seam burst.
What sizes of paddleboards are available?
We offer paddleboards ranging in length from 9′ 2″ to 12’6″. Our SUP’s can accommodate paddleboarders ranging from 50 to 250 pounds.
For more detailed information on our specific paddleboards you can visit our rental page!
Do you have boards suitable for kids/children?
Yes! For children weighing over 50 pounds we have a limited selection of kids-specific paddleboards.
Are tandem (two-person) paddleboards available?
No. All our paddleboards are designed for 1 person only. However, you’re welcome to bring along your dog if they’re up for joining you on a paddle adventure!
Do you rent other watercraft (kayaks, canoes, etc.)?
At this time we only rent stand up paddleboards.
What kind of paddles do you provide?
Every SUP rental includes an NRS Bia 95 Travel Adjustable SUP Paddle. These paddles are adjustable to fit adults of any height. Plus they break down into two pieces to easily fit inside your SUP bag!
We offer the Werner Kids Flash 85 SUP Paddle for our kids rentals.
Are life jackets (PFDs) included with the rental?
Yes! Every SUP rental includes an NRS Crew Universal PFD. These PFD’s are US Coast Guard approved and feature universal sizing adjustments that can fit virtually all paddlers weighing over 90 pounds with chest measurements from 33″-58″.
We outfit kids with the NRS Crew Youth PFD, suitable for weights 55 to 88 pounds and chest measurements of 24″-29″.
Do you provide child-sized life jackets?
Yes! We outfit kids with the NRS Crew Youth PFD, suitable for weights 55 to 88 pounds and chest measurements of 24″-29″.
Can I bring my own paddle or life jacket?
On guided tours our insurance requires that all paddlers use the equipment we provide.
Every SUP rental includes a paddle and life jacket (PFD) at no additional cost. We are required to provide a life jacket (PFD) with every rental and while we encourage you to use the equipment we provide, you are welcome to use your own paddle or life jacket when renting.
Are there weight limits for your boards?
Our boards have a maximum weight capacity of 250 pounds.
Is instruction provided on how to use the equipment?
Yes! Every rental receives a free workshop that emphasizes safety and how to properly utilize all rented equipment. These workshops happen on land (not in the water) and you should prepare to spend 10 to 20 minutes while picking up your rental to receive these instructions.
Are there any restrictions on where I can take the rental equipment?
For your safety and to protect our equipment, we encourage you to use the SUP locations suggested on our website. Please plan your trip in advance and let us know where you intend to paddle—we’re always happy to consult and help you plan a safe and enjoyable paddleboarding experience!
Please note the following restrictions:
Distance from Shore:
Our insurance policy prohibits taking SUP boards more than 1 mile from any shoreline. (This shouldn’t limit your adventure, and we recommend staying close to shore for your safety.)
Whitewater Use:
SUP boards may not be used on whitewater rapids above Class III. Please consult with us before planning any river trips.
General Safety:
If you have a specific location in mind, please check with us first to ensure it’s permitted and safe.
Thank you for understanding and helping us keep everyone safe on the water!
What happens if I damage or lose equipment?
If equipment is lost or damaged beyond normal wear and tear, you are responsible for the cost of repair or replacement, up to the full MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of the item.
When you book, we place a $150 security deposit hold on your credit card. This hold is released once the equipment is returned and passes our inspection.
If you have any questions about our damage or loss policy, please let us know—we’re here to help!
Experience & Requirements:
Do I need prior paddleboarding experience?
No prior paddleboarding experience is required! Our boards are beginner-friendly, and we’re happy to provide basic instructions and safety tips before you head out. If you’re new to paddleboarding, just let us know—we’ll make sure you feel comfortable and confident on the water.
If you’re a beginner, it’s important to pick a paddle location that’s suitable for your skill level. We recommend calm, flatwater areas with easy access and minimal boat traffic. Not sure where to go? We’re happy to suggest beginner-friendly spots and help you plan a safe and enjoyable outing!
Is there an age or weight limit?
Yes, for safety reasons, we do have age and weight limits for our paddleboard rentals. All participants must be at least 10 years old and weigh at least 55 pounds. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Our paddleboards have a maximum weight capacity of 250 pounds. There is no maximum age but you must feel confident in your physical ability to paddleboard and sign a waiver.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes, for your safety, all participants must be able to swim confidently. While we provide life jackets and require you to wear them at all times on the water, being able to swim is essential in case you fall off your paddleboard.
Can children participate?
Yes, children are welcome to join in paddleboarding! For safety, we require that all participants be at least 10 years old. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. All children must wear a properly fitted life jacket at all times while on the water. If you have questions about bringing children or need recommendations for family-friendly paddle locations, please let us know—we’re happy to help!
Are dogs allowed on the boards?
Yes, well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you on your paddleboard! Please make sure your pet is comfortable around water and able to follow basic commands. In our experience, some dogs love being on the water and others would prefer to stay at home while you have fun. For their safety, we recommend that pets wear a properly fitted life jacket. You are responsible for your pet’s safety and for any damage caused to the equipment. If you have questions about bringing your pet or need tips for paddling with animals, just ask—we’re happy to help!
What to Bring & Wear:
What should I wear for paddleboarding?
We recommend wearing comfortable, quick-drying clothing such as a swimsuit, board shorts, or athletic wear. Depending on the weather, you may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses with a strap, and sunscreen for sun protection. Water shoes or sandals with a secure fit are a good idea, but you can also paddle barefoot. Avoid wearing heavy or cotton clothing, as it can become uncomfortable if it gets wet. Don’t forget to bring a towel and a change of clothes for after your paddle! If you have any questions about what to wear, feel free to ask—we’re happy to help you prepare.
What should I bring with me?
We recommend bringing the following items for your paddleboarding adventure:
Water bottle to stay hydrated
Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF
Hat and sunglasses (with a strap) for sun protection
Towel and a change of clothes for after your paddle
Water shoes or sandals (optional, but helpful for rocky areas)
Dry bag for valuables like your phone, keys, or snacks
Any required medications (such as an inhaler or EpiPen)
We provide life jackets and paddles with every rental. If you have any questions about what to bring or need recommendations, just let us know—we’re happy to help!
Do you provide life jackets and other safety equipment?
Yes, we provide life jackets (personal flotation devices) and paddles with every rental. Wearing a life jacket is required at all times while on the water.
We also include a floating waterproof phone case with every SUP rental. We strongly encourage at least one person in your paddle group to bring their (fully charged) phone with them so that you have a reliable way to contact us or emergency services if needed, as well as to help with navigation or capturing photos of your adventure.
Can I bring my own paddleboard or equipment?
You’re welcome to bring your own paddleboard or equipment for rental trips. However, for guided tours, we require all participants to use our provided gear to ensure safety and consistency for the group.

It’s centrally located and less than 5 minutes from SUP Asheville’s pickup and dropoff location, making it super convenient for last-minute needs.

What happens if the weather is bad?
Your safety is our top priority. If bad weather—such as thunderstorms, high winds, or heavy rain—is in the forecast, we may need to reschedule or cancel your rental or tour. We closely monitor weather conditions and will contact you as soon as possible if changes are necessary.
If your booking is affected by unsafe weather, we’re happy to offer a reschedule or a full refund. Minor weather conditions, such as light rain or occasional wind gusts, may not require cancellation and can sometimes make for a unique and enjoyable paddle experience. Of course, we’ll always put your safety first and are happy to discuss any concerns you may have before your trip.
Are there restrooms or changing facilities available?
This depends on where you choose to paddle. Most public access points at popular paddling locations offer basic restroom facilities, but amenities can vary. We recommend checking our Where to SUP page for specific information about each location, including available facilities. If you have questions about a particular spot, feel free to ask—we’re happy to help you plan ahead!
Is there a place to store my belongings?
We do not provide storage space for personal belongings, so we recommend leaving valuables at home or in a secure location. If you need to bring extra items, consider leaving them locked in your car (such as a change of clothes). SUP Asheville is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
If you need to bring essentials with you on the water, we offer waterproof backpacks and dry bags for rent to help keep your belongings safe and dry during your paddle. Plus, we include a floating waterproof phone case with every rental at no extra cost, so you can bring your phone along for safety and photos. Safety & Accessibility:
What safety measures do you have in place?
Your safety is our top priority. We provide a properly fitted life jacket (personal flotation device) and a floating waterproof phone case with every rental, and we require that life jackets be worn at all times while on the water. Our equipment is regularly inspected and maintained to ensure it’s in excellent condition.
Before you head out, we offer a safety briefing with basic paddleboarding instructions, tips for staying safe, and information about local water conditions. We also recommend that at least one person in your group brings a fully charged phone in the provided waterproof case for emergencies.
For guided tours, our experienced guides are trained in paddleboard instruction, CPR, and first aid. If you have any questions or specific safety concerns, please let us know—we’re here to help you have a safe and enjoyable paddle experience!
What should I do if I fall off the board?
Falling off a paddleboard is common, even for experienced paddlers—so don’t worry! If you fall, stay calm and remember that your life jacket will help keep you afloat. Hold onto your paddle if you can, and swim back to your board. Most paddleboards are very stable and easy to climb back onto from the side or rear. Take a moment to regain your balance before continuing.
In the rare instance that you find yourself too far from your board or unable to get back to it safely, prioritize your safety above the equipment. Swim to shore or a safe location first, and do not risk your well-being for the board. If you need assistance or feel unsafe at any time, use your phone (in the provided waterproof case) to call for help. We’re always here to support you and want you to have a safe and enjoyable experience on the water!
Are your services accessible for people with disabilities?
We strive to welcome everyone, and we want all our guests to have a safe and enjoyable experience. Paddleboarding requires the ability to swim and perform basic physical movements, such as getting on and off the board and paddling. If a disability affects your ability to meet these requirements, we may not be able to safely accommodate you.
If you have specific questions about accessibility or your individual needs, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re happy to discuss your situation and recommend the best options to help you enjoy your time on the water as much as possible. We strive to make paddleboarding as accessible as possible while maintaining safety as our number 1 priority.

For guided tours, we make sure every participant leaves with great photos to remember their experience. If you have any special requests, just let us know—we’re happy to help!
What wildlife might I see?
The wildlife you may encounter depends on the location of your paddle. In the Asheville area, it’s common to see a variety of birds, turtles, fish, and sometimes river otters or beavers. You might also spot deer or other animals along the shoreline. Each paddle spot offers its own unique wildlife viewing opportunities!
Is there parking available?
Parking availability depends on the location. Most public access points offer accessible parking, but spaces can sometimes fill up quickly on busy days, especially during peak times. We recommend planning ahead and arriving early to secure a spot. It’s also a good idea to have a backup plan with alternate locations in case parking is full.
